Students at Sacred Heart Catholic School, L'Anse, recently presented a check in the amount of $500 to the Life Outreach Centers of Houghton and Baraga Counties.
The funds were donated by the students during the school’s penny wars contest as part of their Catholic Schools Week activities at the beginning of February.
In a penny war, pennies are worth positive points while all other coins and paper bills are worth negative points. Each classroom had a piggy bank, and students are encouraged to bring in pennies to contribute to their classroom banks in order to accumulate positive points. They are also allowed to place nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills in the banks of other classes to reduce those classes’ points. In the end, the class with the lowest number of negative points is the winner of the penny war.
This year’s winning class was Wendy Hiltunen’s 3rd and 4th-grade class. But the true winner is the Life Outreach Center in L’Anse, who was the recipient of the funds. Students had donated $497.63 during the penny wars, and the school made up the difference so the students could present a check in the amount of $500 to Mark Cavis, executive director of the Life Outreach Centers of Houghton and Baraga Counties, and Darlene Andersen from the L’Anse center. The funds will be used to support services offered at the L’Anse Life Outreach Center.
