The St. Francis Connection Center at K.I. Sawyer recently received a grant from the Community Foundation of Marquette County to support their meals-to-go program for those in need during this time of pandemic.
With the help of the grant, the center was able to go from distributing roughly 40 meals a week to over 150, said Father Allen Mott, pastor of St. Anthony’s Parish.
To receive the grant was “an absolute joy,” Fr. Mott said. “It’s the community supporting groups that are already involved in particular areas, so this can happen very powerfully and very quickly. If you would’ve asked me six weeks ago if we would have served over 1,300 meals in six weeks, I would’ve been like ‘This is not going to happen.’ You respond to the need and that’s exactly what I think the Community Foundation of Marquette County did. They responded to the need. They saw a need and they responded in the way they did, which allowed us to respond more effectively in the way we did.”
The St. Francis Connection Center is an outreach ministry of St. Anthony Parish in Gwinn. It's mission is to build relationships that help people see and experience the Gospel of Jesus Christ active and present in the surrounding area.
St. Francis Connection Center was started by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres. After discovering that many families struggled with food insecurity, the sisters started a bread distribution program, and in 2007 the nuns’ work and the center was formally recognized.
The center distributes food and helps spread the Catholic faith through religious education, prayer, and community gathering. Those who are served start to believe and trust that they are loved through the ministry of the Center.
