Tell me about yourself.
I am deeply honored to share my story with you all. Born and raised in the serene beauty of Marquette, my journey has been intricately woven with the fabric of Catholic values and education. I entered the education field as a middle school and high school teacher, and eventually worked my way to the School of Education at Northern Michigan University, and then Father Marquette Catholic Academy. I attended Northern Michigan University and earned three degrees over the years: Bachelor of Arts, Secondary Education, Master of Arts, English and Pedagogy, and Education Specialist. I also graduated from Central Michigan University with my doctor of education in winter of 2019.
From a young age, I felt a profound calling towards the realm of education, particularly within the nurturing environment of Catholic Schools. The notion of shaping young minds while instilling the timeless virtues of faith, compassion, and knowledge resonated deeply within me.
Along this journey, I’ve been blessed with a wonderful partner, Jonny Betz, who shares my devotion to our faith and our family. Together, we are the proud parents of two remarkable daughters, Elin, age 13, and Wilhelmina, age 9. Our household is filled with laughter, love, and adventure, as we explore the great outdoors and revel in the beauty of God’s creation. Our family loves to bike, hike, run, ski, and spend time on Lake Independence, both during the summer and winter months.
We are so blessed to be a part of the Catholic community in Marquette. From the warmth of fellowship to the depth of spiritual guidance, we have found solace, support, and a true sense of belonging within this vibrant community.
Moreover, our involvement in the Catholic School system has been a cornerstone of our family’s journey. Witnessing our daughters grow in both faith and knowledge within the nurturing embrace of Catholic education has been a source of immense pride and joy for us.
What are you looking forward to most about serving as the new director of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Marquette?
As I step into the role of director of Catholic Schools, I am filled with excitement and a profound sense of purpose to serve each of our Catholic Schools and nurture the growth of our educational community throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
From the very depths of my being, I am a firm believer in the power of servant leadership. It is not merely a title or a position but a calling to dedicate oneself to the service of others, to uplift, empower, and inspire. As I embark on this journey, I am committed to embodying this ethos, walking alongside our students, educators, families, and communities with humility, compassion, and unwavering support.
Our Catholic Schools are not just institutions of learning; they are beacons of faith, hope, and love. They are sanctuaries where minds are enlightened, hearts are nurtured, and souls are nourished. Together, we have the profound opportunity and responsibility to shape not only the minds but also the spirits of our young people, guiding them towards a future rooted in faith, integrity, and service.
Who is your favorite saint and why?
My absolute favorite saint is St. Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower Child. She believed in doing little things in life well and with great love. She is such an inspiration.
What is your advice for fellow Catholics?
My advice to fellow Catholics is to never forget that true joy comes from our faith and Jesus Christ. I often see so many people searching for joy in earthly things, and I wish for people to know that there is only one place to find it.
