Holy Name Catholic School recently received a $100,000 boost to their capital campaign to re-open a Holy Name Catholic High School. On the heels of a similar challenge in 2018 to Catholic schools in the diocese, the Diocese of Marquette offered a challenge gift to incentivize giving to the capital campaign to raise money to reopen Holy Name Catholic High School. Currently, there are no Catholic high schools in the U.P.
In partnership with the U.P. Catholic Foundation, Inc., school officials and Bishop John Doerfler determined match criteria to incentivize support for the campaign. The intent of the challenge was to maximize overall giving and number of contributors in the early stages of the campaign.
The challenge was met in March of 2020, with over $100,000 in qualifying gifts raised by the school and $100,000 matched by the diocese. All funds raised and matched went into the Holy Name Catholic School Crusader Loyalty Endowment Fund.
The purpose of the Crusader Loyalty Endowment Fund is to provide financial support for the operation of a proposed expansion of the school to serve high school students.
In October 2018, Bishop John Doerfler and Mark Salisbury, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, lent their backing to this extraordinary capital campaign to reopen Holy Name Catholic High School. In a letter of support for the school’s campaign efforts, the two said, “The re-opening of Holy Name Catholic High School will ensure that many young people in our diocese grow into a deeper friendship with Jesus Christ and continue to practice their faith as Catholic adults, becoming spirit filled evangelizers who pass on their gift of faith to others in the future.” The Phase I goals of the capital campaign will effectively re-open the high school and lay the foundation through endowment building for sustainable operations.
